6 DIY Projects Using Vintage Suitcases
As an avid traveller I love the idea of upcycling things like vintage suitcases into shabby chic furniture pieces. I often imagine myself having an apartment once again and accenting it with upcycled pieces that remind me of my love for travel and exploration. My latest obsession is vintage suitcases. OMG I love vintage suitcases – you know, once you get the smell out of them!!
Suitcase Accent Chair
This suitcase chair by Kate Thompson actually made me squee with joy. How f-ing cute is that?! Naturally this is a designer version using supple leather, so I scoured the internet and found a DIY version by See Kate Sew which shows you how to make this chair in very simple steps. It’s a super cute idea and one that I have bookmarked on Pinterest for my future apartment – whenever that happens!
I love the idea of having a vintage suitcase table as an accent in a hallway, in a little reading corner, or as an end table in the living room or bedroom. Lets face it, I could put this ANYWHERE is my future apartment and I would totally love it – especially if I made the effort to buy the suitcase and make the table myself. And thankfully there is a rather helpful DIY tutorial on House and Home by Keeley Durocher on how to make it.
Suitcase Cat Bed
I’m not a cat owner (slightly allergic), but I imagine if I were I would be tempted to make a cat bed out of a vintage suitcase. I mean, how cute would that be?!?! The lovely Donna from My Sweet Things has posted a super easy tutorial on how to make this über unique cat bed – and I imagine if you’re a portrait photographer you could do this and use for baby photo shoots, instead of cats.
Oh, hello accent wall of my dreams! This is another DIY project that made me squee with joy. I LOVE this idea! Of course I would need to know somebody with a saw because there is no way I should be trusted to operate a saw on my own. That being said ManMade posted a rather short and easy post on how to do this yourself. You know, because you probably have the ability to use a saw safely.
Wanna come to my place when the time comes and help a girl out?!
OMG MY MIND IS BLOWN! And probably my ears. A few years ago there was an etsy seller selling what was called Boomcase which was vintage suitcases turned into speakers. Genius, right?!? Unfortunately they have disappeared off the internets, but thankfully the awesome peeps over at Instructables have posted a tutorial on how to make your own suitcase speakers!
I’m totally doing this.
Suitcase Charging Station
There are so many ways to upcycle small vintage cosmetic suitcases, but turning it into a charging station for my iPhone and other small gadgets is probably my favourite idea (after turning it into speakers!!!). I found a great DIY tutorial on Design Sponge that looks fairly straightforward. Again, this baby is bookmarked for when I get that elusive apartment – wherever in the world that may be!
