It’s not every day that one has the opportunity to visit Québec’s Hôtel de Glace (Ice Hotel), but when travelling in Québec City between the beginning of January and the end of March, venturing out to Hôtel de Glace is a must.
Oddly enough it took me three winters to finally make time to visit the ice hotel.
It takes fifty people about six weeks to take 500 tons of ice and 30,000 tons of snow and turn it into Hôtel de Glace — the only hotel in North America that is made entirely of snow and ice!
While I could write about the delight I felt looking at the crystal blue ice and the shimmering white snow, I think the best way to experience Hôtel de Glace (aside from visiting in person) is through photographs.

Each year the hotel is built around a theme, this year (2016) the theme is rivers: common hotel spaces and suites in the hotel feature a river scene; whether it’s a frozen river, a glacier, or the flowing design of a riverbed. While spending the night at the hotel would be amazing (you also get a reservation at Four Points Sheraton incase it gets too cold for you), I loved spending a few hours walking around.
During the daytime all the rooms are open, allowing everyone who visits the hotel to wander around as much as they like: rooms with a blue curtain/door are standard rooms, ones with a red curtain/door are themed suites that feature stunning ice and snow sculptures. I highly recommend checking out room 1, a premium suite that comes with a fireplace, as well as a door that leads to the hotel’s sauna and hot tub.
If you’re venturing out to Hôtel de Glace, consider sticking around and let the winter fun continue by going tubing at Valcartier, but not until you’ve had a yummy cold lunch at the hotel’s indoor café (I recommend the ham, brie, and caramelized onion sandwich!).
